Now Sold: Superb MG Midget Mk1

JGM (Jolly Green Midget) is a Mk1 second generation (Chassis prefix Gan2) - meaning that it benefits from disk brakes and an 1100cc engine. It still has the Frogeye style cockpit, and the clean lines of the earlier generation of Midget and Sprite but has slightly more power and better braking efficiency.

Rescued and refurbished

When this little car came to me it was suffering with a worn gearbox. The early Midgets and Sprites don’t have synchromesh on first, but this poor car was slipping out of gear and crunching badly from 2nd to third. So, the engine and gearbox were removed so the gears could be inspected.

The gearbox was taken to Bill at Hardy Engineering in Leatherhead, Surrey. Bill is an expert in Healey and MG gearboxes, and he took the time to build up a new gear-set.

The new transmission was installed with a new clutch cover and plate along with a new ‘old stock’ release bearing courtesy of David Smith (an MG Midget racing friend and collector of original MG and Healey parts).

An older restoration

This car is an older restoration, with solid bodywork and structures. There is no rust or corrosion in the structure at all. The car is in lovely condition and the restoration work was very good indeed. The paint finish is not perfect, but it looks great and gives a lovely 'period' appeal to the car. The colour is British racing green GN25 which was only applied to the early MG's before being replaced with the darker GN29 in later models.
“The Jolly Green Midget is the perfect blend of early Midget motoring within an appreciating classic.” David Jerram
